Salmon and Broccoli Noodles

28.10.19 Our first two groups had a chance to cook their first family meal today of Salmon and Broccoli Noodles. We had a wee taste and all thought it was delicious. As of next week, we will start to write the recipes up and post them on the page above so that you can have a go at home too.

30.9.19 Recipe selections

Today the children discussed the recipes they had researched and explained to the class what made them healthy; linking them to the Eatwell Guide as well as considering the budget the children have. The children had also consulted the website; where they had found some different recipes they might also try at home. We also discussed how we could accommodate some food intolerance and preferences e.g. vegetarian options.

The children then voted for the ones they would like to make. It was great to hear the different choices that the children were making from previous years and their wide variety of likes and dislikes.

The children will make Pizzas on their trip to Pizza Express in January. After the October break, we will then make Salmon and Broccoli Noodles, Lasagne, Stovies and a Pie. The meat used in these may vary according to children’s choices.

Following this, the groups did some work to look at the energy we gain from food and were surprised to find out foods that were high in calories and compare 100g serving and the energy received from them.

Community Grant Award

I’m delighted to announce that we have received a Community Grant from Scotmid Co-Op of £400. Part of this funding will be used toward purchasing the food to continue with our P7 food project and is very appreciated in allowing us to continue this great experience for the children. We’d like to pass on our thanks to Scotmid whom we have an excellent partnership with and have very supportive of the school.

Food Hygiene Training

This week, Mr Patrick McAfferty (Highland Council) gave us food hygiene training. We learned about the common causes of food poisoning and how to prevent it. We used talcum powder and moisturiser to show the spread of germs between people just by shaking hands and sharing desks and pencils. We checked how thoroughly our volunteers washed their hands, using ultraviolet lights.

Ask us to recall and explain at least three things from Monday’s training.

The Eatwell Guide

Last week Mrs Laird revised the food groups with us and showed us how to use the interactive Eatwell Guide. We had a discussion about our favourite main meals and had to find a healthy, affordable recipe to share with Mrs Laird and Miss Mullin. In the coming weeks, we will have to narrow down our list to four main meals. Each one needs to feed a family of four for less than £8!

Welcome to our 2019-20 blog for our P7 cooking project. Please take a moment to sign up to alerts by email by clicking on the follow section to the right of this post. We will then post our various cooking and recipes as we go throughout the year.
