We had our last cooking session today with our final groups adding their pastry to the steak pies we started making yesterday. Everyone has now completed Salmon and Noodles, Lasagne, Stovies, Pizza and Steak Pie. We’ve had great fun while doing it. Next week we’ll consider all the things we’ve learnt since starting the cooking project. Have a look at our recipes on the page above and see if you can have a go at home!
In the last week of term, all the P7s had great fun making their own pizzas. We had toppings from anchovies and tuna to pepparoni and chicken. Many of the recipes are now available in the recipe sections above.
Today, the first two groups made their lasange with a difference – using sausage instead of mince so that they experienced something different from our previously made stovies. It smelt delicious!
All groups have now completed making stovies. Recipes for all but today’s group are available in the recipe page above (some are still to be fully completed.) We hope you have enjoyed them at home too. Next week we will all make pizzas as a final end of term fun activity while next term we hope to tie in a cooking session up at the High School Home Economics department.
Last Friday (29th November) P7 visited The Glenurquhart Centre to help to decorate saltire biscuits.
We learned a lot of lessons about how to make blue icing: you need a lot of icing sugar but hardly any water! Eventually, thanks to some kind helpers, we got the icing to work. Putting the white cross on was a lot harder than it looks in the photos!
Many of the P7s got chatting to some of the grown ups, and were particularly fascinated by a 1,000 piece jigsaw which showed a WW2 ambulance.

Our first two groups made stovies today. One group made a vegetarian option using vegetable stock and quorn mince instead. It smelt much nicer in the Bubble than the Salmon over the last few weeks! We learnt how to peel and cut potatoes and onions. We learnt the claw and bridge grips also.
Today a group of children visited Scotmid to use our vouchers to buy ingredients for our next recipe – Stovies. They had already done their budget and looked at how much they needed to buy.
On Friday (15th November) some of our P7s visited the Scotmid to check their prices for the ingredients that we need to buy to make Stovies.
Yesterday, the P7s worked in their cooking groups to figure out how much we will need to spend at Scotmid if we buy all the ingredients for 5 cooking groups. Next week we will use this information to work out the cost per portion.
We are very grateful to Scotmid for all their help with our cooking project.
Last Tuesday and Wednesday, the P7s worked in their cooking groups to make Dairy Free Rocky Road. Thanks to Mrs Russell’s help and advice, it was a success and we all enjoyed a piece on Wednesday playtime. We all agreed that the trickiest part is bashing up the biscuits – you want to end up with chunks of biscuit through the mixture (not powder) but it’s so tempting to use the rolling pin a lot! After being involved with making it, the P7s wrote up their own individual versions of the recipes last Wednesday (13th November.)
Our last group cooked their salmon recipe today!
Some cooking groups worked hard to write up their recipes using Google Slides.
Those who completed their recipes played “Foodbusters” and/or “Bubbles and slime” to revise their food hygiene knowledge. Some of the P7s demonstrated excellent recall of last term’s food hygiene training and previous science work with Mrs Mann. 🙂 (Ms Young and Miss Mullin felt really old when none of the P7s recognised the “Blockbusters” theme tune!)
